Install
Use the Add to Chrome link on RANURANU to open LingPeek's official Chrome Web Store listing. RANURANU keeps that store URL in one shared product configuration so the same listing is used across LingPeek pages.
First setup
Open the LingPeek popup
Use the extension icon to open the compact control panel.
Choose the source behavior
Leave Source language on Detect automatically or select the source language manually when detection is uncertain.
Choose the target language
The initial target follows a sensible Chrome UI-language default when supported. You can always change it.
Confirm LingPeek is enabled
Check the global toggle and the current-site toggle before translating.
Translate a sentence
- Open an ordinary webpage in desktop Chrome 138 or newer.
- Select an eligible foreign-language sentence or phrase.
- Keep the selection active while LingPeek detects the source and prepares the translation.
- Read the result in Translate Lens around the selected position.
The page text is not permanently replaced.
Translate one word
Select the word normally. LingPeek can consider nearby sentence context, the page’s language hints, Chrome language detection, and previous reliable language context. If the result is uncertain, select a short phrase or choose the source language manually. LingPeek is not a dictionary database and a single word can still have several valid meanings.
Show the original
When Show original on Alt is enabled in Settings, hold Alt while Translate Lens is visible to temporarily reveal the source text.
Copy the translation
Use the Copy action inside Translate Lens. The copied result goes to the system clipboard; LingPeek does not create a translation-history list.
Pause one site
Open the popup on the page and turn off the current-site control. LingPeek stores the normalized hostname in its local disabled-sites preference. Re-enable the site from the same popup or remove it from the Disabled sites list in Settings.
Use LingPeek on local HTML
- Open Chrome → Extensions → Manage Extensions.
- Open LingPeek → Details.
- Turn on Allow access to file URLs.
- Reload the local
file://HTML page. - Select ordinary text in the rendered document.
LingPeek does not scan local directories. It only sees accessible text in a local HTML page the user opened and Chrome allowed the extension to access.
First-use language resources
Chrome’s built-in Translator manages the language resources required for a source/target pair. The first time a pair is used, Chrome can report that the resource is downloadable or downloading. Keep the page open, follow the Translate Lens prompt if Chrome needs user confirmation, and retry after preparation finishes.
Smart Trigger
LingPeek intentionally stays quiet for selections that are clearly unsuitable, including standalone URLs, email addresses, numbers, prices, punctuation, file paths, hashes, long identifiers, command-only text, code-heavy selections, selections longer than the current 1,500-character limit, and text already in the target language.
Limitations
LingPeek cannot inject into Chrome-controlled or protected pages, Chrome Web Store pages, inaccessible cross-origin frames, canvas-rendered text, or some custom document editors. v0.4.0 does not translate PDFs, images, subtitles, input fields, or entire pages. Review LingPeek Support for troubleshooting and visible error codes.
