Practical help for LingPeek.

Start with the checks below when text selection, language detection, Chrome-local translation, Translate Lens behavior, or Local HTML access does not work as expected.

Basic use

Confirm the normal workflow before troubleshooting an edge case.

Open the popup

Confirm the global toggle is on.

Choose languages

Leave source on Auto or choose it manually; select the target language you want.

Select ordinary page text

Select one eligible word, phrase, or sentence on a normal webpage.

Read and control the result

Read Translate Lens at the selection, hold Alt to reveal the original, and use Copy when needed.

Common problems

Use the smallest non-destructive check first.

Nothing happens after selection

  1. Confirm LingPeek is enabled globally.
  2. Open the popup and confirm the current site is not paused.
  3. Check whether the selection is already in the target language.
  4. Try a normal sentence rather than a URL, number, command, file path, code block, input field, or protected page.
  5. Reload tabs that were already open when LingPeek was installed or updated.

A single word seems ambiguous

  1. Remember that isolated words can have several meanings.
  2. Select a short phrase that includes the word.
  3. Choose the source language manually if Auto is uncertain.
  4. Do not expect a dictionary-style list of senses; LingPeek uses Chrome translation with context and reliability checks.

Chrome is preparing a language

  1. Keep the tab open.
  2. Use the visible confirmation or retry action if Chrome requests user activation.
  3. Initial internet access may be needed for Chrome-managed language resources.
  4. Retry after the preparation progress finishes.

This is Chrome-managed language preparation, not a LingPeek content-download server.

Local HTML does not work

  1. Chrome → Extensions → Manage Extensions.
  2. LingPeek → Details.
  3. Allow access to file URLs → ON.
  4. Reload the local HTML page.
  5. Select rendered page text, not code in a <pre> or editor field.

LingPeek does not work on a Chrome page

Extensions cannot inject into chrome:// pages, Chrome Web Store pages, and other browser-controlled or protected surfaces. Test on an ordinary http://, https://, or user-authorized file:// page.

The result appears in the wrong place

  1. Keep the selection active until Translate Lens appears.
  2. Retry with a shorter selection inside one visible text block.
  3. Custom editors, canvas text, transformed elements, and inaccessible frames may not expose a stable DOM range.

Visible error codes

These codes come from the current v0.4.0 source and can make a support report more specific.

CodeMeaning and next step
LP-T00Local translation is unavailable in this Chrome build or page. Use desktop Chrome 138+ on an ordinary webpage.
LP-D01LingPeek could not identify the source language. Select a longer phrase or choose the source manually.
LP-T01Chrome needs user confirmation to prepare the language resource. Use the visible retry or confirmation action.
LP-T02The requested language pair is not available through Chrome on this installation.
LP-T03Chrome could not finish preparing the language resource. Check connectivity and retry.
LP-T04Language preparation exceeded LingPeek’s current timeout. Wait for Chrome to finish and retry.
LP-T05The translation request took too long. Retry with a shorter selection or another supported pair.
LP-T06Translation failed for an unclassified reason. Retry once, then include the code in a support report.
LP-T07Chrome could not save an extension preference, for example because local extension storage rejected the write.
LP-W01LingPeek could not obtain a reliable isolated-word result. Select a short phrase or choose the source language.

Report a problem

Include LingPeek version, Chrome version, operating system, source language, target language, a public page URL if safe, the exact non-sensitive selected text, visible error code, reproduction steps, and an optional redacted screenshot.

Do not send passwords, authentication tokens, private documents, confidential text, or sensitive screenshots.
