Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 19, 2026 · Applies to LingPeek v0.4.0 and the LingPeek product pages on ranuranu.com.

1. Scope

This policy covers the LingPeek Chrome extension and the LingPeek product pages on RANURANU. It describes LingPeek’s behavior; it does not replace Google Chrome’s privacy terms or the policies of websites you visit.

2. Website content processed by LingPeek

When you deliberately create an eligible text selection, LingPeek can temporarily process:

  • the selected text;
  • a bounded nearby sentence or context fragment when needed for language detection or short-selection interpretation;
  • relevant language metadata, including nearby element or document lang information;
  • the current normalized hostname or the local-file site key to determine whether LingPeek is paused for that site.

This processing is performed only to provide the user-requested translation interaction. The current source limits selections to 1,500 normalized characters and ignores categories of text that Smart Trigger considers unsuitable.

3. Translation processing

LingPeek uses Chrome’s built-in Translator functionality. LingPeek does not operate a RANURANU translation server and the current source does not send selected text to an external translation API.

Chrome may prepare or download browser-managed language resources required by the requested source/target pair. This policy describes LingPeek’s handling; Google’s separate Chrome privacy practices govern Chrome itself.

4. Data stored locally

LingPeek uses chrome.storage.local for extension preferences. The current v0.4.0 source stores these fields:

  • schemaVersion — settings schema metadata;
  • enabled — global on/off state;
  • sourceLanguage — automatic detection or the chosen source language;
  • targetLanguage — the chosen translation language;
  • showOriginalOnAlt — whether Alt temporarily reveals the original text;
  • disabledSites — normalized hostnames and the local-file site key where LingPeek is paused.

The service worker removes an obsolete early scaffold field named lingpeek_page_context; current page content is requested directly from the active content script and is not stored there.

5. Data not retained by LingPeek

LingPeek v0.4.0 does not create persistent storage for selected text, nearby sentence context, translated text, or translation history. An in-memory result cache can temporarily exist in the active page’s content script for performance, and it disappears with the page or extension context rather than becoming a user-visible history.

6. Accounts

No LingPeek or RANURANU account is required for v0.4.0.

7. Analytics, advertising, tracking, and sale

The extension source contains no behavioral analytics, advertising SDK, translation telemetry sent to RANURANU, or external translation request. RANURANU does not sell selected text, browsing data, or LingPeek preferences.

This statement concerns the extension. The public RANURANU website is delivered through hosting and security infrastructure that may process ordinary technical request information as described in the site-wide Privacy Policy.

8. Local HTML files

LingPeek’s content script includes file:// pages, but Chrome requires you to explicitly enable Allow access to file URLs. LingPeek does not scan directories or crawl local files. It can process only accessible text from a local HTML page you opened and selected.

9. Chrome permissions and page access

storage

Stores the preferences listed in Section 4 using Chrome extension local storage.

activeTab

Used when you open the popup so LingPeek can identify the active page, show or change the current-site state, and communicate with the active content script. It is not used to build browsing history.

HTTP, HTTPS, and file page access

The manifest declares content scripts for ordinary http://, https://, and file:// pages. This access lets LingPeek observe a user-created text selection, collect the bounded context needed for the disclosed translation feature, and place Translate Lens at the selection. File access remains under the user’s explicit Chrome setting.

10. Chrome Web Store user-data commitment

LingPeek’s use of information received through Chrome APIs and page access is limited to providing or improving its disclosed single-purpose translation functionality and related operational needs. RANURANU handles that information consistently with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. LingPeek does not use page content or browsing activity for personalized advertising or unrelated purposes.

11. Support emails

If you voluntarily email contact@ranuranu.com, RANURANU receives your email address and the content you choose to send so it can respond. Do not include sensitive text or screenshots unless they are necessary and you intentionally choose to share them.

12. Children

LingPeek is a general-audience reading utility and is not designed or marketed as a child-directed service.

13. Changes

This policy will be updated before materially different account, cloud, analytics, advertising, paid, or data-handling practices apply. The Last updated date will change when a material revision is published.
